War Poem #3
A short poem on the commemoration of the dead of wars past, referencing Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen': 'We shall remember them...' And Ecclesiastes 9:4,5.
Fallen
We, the living shall think of them
If only in fleeting or on a commemorative day
The sight of old record, each cohort
Coming forward, a new line replacing those
Falling and coming on again, tumbling,
Changing like cogs to turn the gear of war
And sow the fathers’ land with blood
They are not now thinking, all cold, all gone
A legacy from which there is no learning
Just a footnote with something about glory
The heroes all dead lions, a testament for living dogs
